If I use tung oil or Danish oil to finish the decks, how do I then glue anything to them?

Alan,
I used tung oil on my last two models, and medium viscosity CA (cyanoacrylate) glue worked just fine for me. It takes a while to set, but the use of an accelerator ("kicker") speeds things up. Depending on the situation, spraying the kicker directly on the edge of the joint (watch out! for surrounding painted surfaces which may be affected), or spraying it on a Q-tip (beware the fuzz) or toothpick and dabbing the joint or target surface first, makes for a nearly instant bond. |

Thanks Art.
I have plenty of CA gel around. I use it whenever I can't think of anything else. I guess it is the answer to this problem also. Alan

Alan:
I would think that if the gel works, so would the "quick set" liquid . I've never used tongue oil, so I have no idea. You might want to try it on a piece of scrap first.

Alan,
I read somewhere once that "pure" tung oil is not a good thing (I forget why), so I use Minwax Tung Oil Finish. Make sure it's fresh though! I had a can that was a year or so old- it seemed ok, but it didn't dry down as it should have i.e. it dried somewhat glossy on the first coat, and remained a bit tacky for awhile. |

Hello Alan,I have coated my decks with two coats of tung oil. What I am going to do with the deck furnishings is to carefilly sand the the spots where they will be attached.I may also use small wooden dowels to ensure that things will be bonded solidly..Cheers Walter

Hi Alan --
I have also used tang oil on my decks , with good results . I use the same approach as Walter -- scrape away the area where deck fittings will go and attach with a small dowel ( I use cut up tooth pics ) to secure items to the deck applying a small drop of CA to the dowel / pin . Gary
