I've read that beeswaxing rigging line acts to preserve it. I just finished the King of the Mississippi and used cotton/polyester line. It looked fine (no fuzzies and it hung OK- I got the kinks out gently with a heat gun), but as an afterthought I "painted" all the rigging with beeswax dissolved in turpentine (which I had read about somewhere- it worked well). How much more longevity can I expect from the treated lines over say those on my previous boat, a Mantua Armed Launch, with untreated cotton/polyester lines (which also look just fine)? Is it worth the effort to "paint" them too?
Are we talking years, decades? of preservation? Thanks in advance for any input. |

I have no idea; But my resident thread expert (wife) says cotton / polyester thread will last for "decades" if left untreated. If it's not too much trouble, the bee's wax wouldn't hurt, and might help to extend the life of the rigging.

Thanks, James. You're right, it certainly can't hurt. The hardest part will be getting the boat out of the case and back into the shop.

Well, I'm going through withdrawal waiting for my next project to arrive, so I brought the Armed Launch out and treated all the rigging with the beeswax/turpentine. It only took a couple of hours, and it felt good to have the magnifiers on and be modeling again.
