Sail help
Hi all,
I am new to the forum, and although I am not really a ship modeler, I thought I might get some help here. I am a paper artist and sculptor based in the United Kingdom. I have been commisioned to produce a fleet of fantasy ships to be displayed in the Children's ward of a new hospital. I have completed the hulls of the ships, and I attempted to make sails in different, unusual shapes at first, but they didn't look right. I would like the sails to be more realistic, or accurate, but I don't know anything about sails. The bodies of the ships are modeled off of paintings, drawings, and a few visits to museums, but I haven't been able to get a good set of sails yet. Could anyone offer me any information about good sources for sail patterns or perhaps tell me how to figure it out? Is there some sort of formula?? Many thanks!! Jolie |

Glad to have you on board Jolie. Pre- sewn sails can be expensive . For your ships you can always use white handkerchiefs ( not expensive) and tie them up to your spars in different arrangements . Just a thought...........

If you can lay your hands on a copy, Harland's Seamanship in the Age of Sail has many fine images of a wide variety of sails. He includes photos, drawings and paintings of actual ships and images of models. Also included are a many diagrams showing the construction, shape and attachment of sails to the masts and yards.
It's visually a very nice work although some of the explaination will most likely be far more technical than your project calls for. If you get a chance, I'd love to see images of your results. I'm very curious about using paper in models (even if what you're doing is more fanciful than model like, the technique could be quite instructive). Regards Jim

Is it possible for us to see a photo of the yards and masts? Just to see what the sails will be attached to. That would make it easier for us to suggest any materials and shapes for the sails.
Sounds like a very interesting project. How large is this fleet? JD

OH, about the piccies, I don't like to post work in progress shots because sometimes I do huge do-overs. I've been known to 'scuttle' a nearly completed project and completely start over from scratch.
You'll get to see 'em when they're done. Promise.  |

Ahh… the artistic temperament.... not realizing the value of all that labor!! You're supposed to save every precious little bit of it...
On a related but wacky tangent my wife, when I mentioned your project, suggested looking at the Lord of the Rings (the movie) for the moment that Gandalf blows a smoke cloud to look like a fully rigged sailing ship or Disney's Peter Pan for the image of the cloud sailing ship crossing past the moon near the end. You know, all that gossamer, ethereal stuff, nothing like real ships... In any case, I reiterate my request for pictures, in progress or complete work, preferably with a few detail shots. Anyhow, glad we could help, now go out there and get those creative juices flowing. Regards Jim
