Hi James,
Thanks for the info. My hip is healing well thanks but I overdid it during the weekend and am paying the price in pain. Skiing is on the back burner for a while, but I do hope to get a few easy runs in before the end of next season. My Rattlesnake kit is standing by, but right now I'm working on shaping the hull of my Sultana and gathering the materials for a scratch build of the Syren. I'm using Chuck Passaro's practicums for both builds. Anne ![]() |

thank you for the info and imput . I may just leave the bars in the capstan . capstan cable chasers tied to anchor cable - capstan chalks inplace -- anchor raised to cat head -- crew "fishing" the anchor -- does this sound right ? This ship is starting to comsume me !!!???!!! - lol HOLD FAST !

I think that's correct. The chalks are the pawls I think. If that's correct, then it all sounds okay.

Gary: By the time the crew fished the anchor, the capstan bars would have been removed. They are never left in place when not in use due to the danger of the pawls slipping and the capstan spinning around and throwing the bars out at high speed. But you could show the anchor cable "snubbed" and slacked off, with one crew member removing the bars.
When in place , they had a small rope securing the bars to the capstan at the "butt" end to prevent "ejection". Did the RC use a "cable messenger"? Then you need a bunch of "little nippers" in your crew as well. How involved are you going to make this "diorama"? You may be "on the foc'sle for the next year! ![]()

yes the RC did use a cable messenger , so the nippers will have to be added as well -- you say another year in build time -- maybe two !! I may want to re-think the whole idea ?. HOLD FAST !

Gary:
Well...If you are in the process of "fishing the anchor" it could be as follows: 1. Anchor "lashed" to cathead (cat falls removed) 2. No anchor cable visible (it's "below decks"); Therefore, no "nippers", or capstan bars. 3. Fish davit erected and fish attached to anchor with "crew" heaving on the line. 4. Capstan bars "racked" on the ceiling (inner bulkhead). That would get rid of those "dirty little nippers" and the men at the capstan. There, I just eliminated half your crew for you (no thanks necessary), so, it's still only a year more (more or less). ![]()
