Smile Experiences with San Giovanni Battista?

Hello. First time poster and general shipbuilder newbie. My only experience thus far was recently completing a Scientific Constitition from 1975. My father bought it, built the first 3 steps, and put it away until a year ago when he gave it to me to complete. I think I'm hooked! Next up, San Giovanni Battista from Artesania Latina- my first attempt at planking. Any experiences building this kit would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Kritter.

Welcome "kritter" LOL

I don't have experience with the San Giovanni yet but it is on my shelf for the future. After I opened the kit and recovered from the shock of seeing all the metal I did take the initiative, to try to convert as many metal parts as I could into laser etched wood. All of the gratings, many doors, and other stuff were converted. I did receive those pieces and they look great! A major improvement! Not all of the doors and windows that I gave them were converted but they did scan them into the computer and are now pending.

Contact Steve Owen at Double O Laser, he may not have the completed conversion kit up for sale at the moment but should very soon or sooner if you have good persuation powers...

Good luck

Dave

Thanks for the quick response and excellent tip, Dave. If it's ok with you, I'll reference your post when I contact Steve (I'm sure it can't hurt having the power of the Second Mate behind my request!)

Hi, kritter,
I just talked with Steve at OO Laser and learned that the wood conversion kit is complete for the San Giovanni Battista. This is a rather extensive change to the kit and converts about 2/3 of the metal to wood. Actually there is still allot more metal that will have to be converted/carved by hand.

I'm sure he would be able to give you a fair price now although he still has to update his web page.

cheers,
Dave

Yep, thanks, Dave. I just talked with him about this earlier last week. Sent off a check right away and looking forward to the parts! BTW, getting close to planking the hull -- first timer, you know. My plan is to soak the planks and buy one of those electric planing tools. Any advice? Happy Holidays, Dave!

Dave: Just received the SGB parts from Steve - they look awesome! This guy is a great find - his work really highlights just how bad the "laser cut" parts are that come with the kit. Will be a real improvement to my ship. Thanks again for the tip!

I'm glad you like them. Remember, if anyone has a kit with allot of metal parts that might be candidates for conversion just call OO Laser. He will do them for you free of charge to get the opportunity to sell the sets in the future.

Also, the parts should be two dimensional, or easy to laser cut. Not three dimensional unless you don't mind carving most of the detail. Although Steve did a great job on the San Juan Nep quarter galleries.

Oh, good luck on the planking, take your time. What wood are you going to use?

cheers,
Dave

Thanks, Dave. The kit is a single plank design. I believe this is why the wood included is 2mm thick Mahagony. This outta make it plenty challenging for a first time bender!
