This is the best phantom model, how does he do it?

Posted by: stevek - on -  08-31-2007

Everyone who has ever built the Phantom , is building one or is considering to build one should check out this site. This is built from scratch and the detail is "mind-blowing realistic". The site is Asian so scroll down to the listing of projects this guy has built until you see the Phantom image on the right. Then you will see several steps of "plank on frame" until you see the finished model on page two. How does he get it so realistic looking? Check out the detail on the bow. If I could do a diorama water base like his.....WOW.
If anyone know how to do water like this, and get the aged look on the steel fitting please posts your techniques. Here is the address: I't a incredible long address but it is good. Let me know what you think. New to this forum,

Stevek

Link to the Phantom - http://homepage3.nifty.com/shiphome...antom-page1.htm and to his photo gallery - http://homepage3.nifty.com/shiphome/sakuhin.htm, and home page - http://homepage3.nifty.com/shiphome/

Steve, you were trying to link through Google search, sometimes causes misplaced links.

I came across that website a few months ago. The models of Phantom and Alert are truly mindblowing. I believe it is the website for a Japanese modeling club. If it's the same site I'm thinking of (it's possible I'm confusing two different sites) one of the members is building/has built a scratchbuilt Vic that is also stunning.

The diorama is absolutely stunning. The modeler certainly knows his weathering techniques. Techniques to do the water and weathering techniques can be found in Sheperd Paine's book How to Build Dioramas, an excellent addition to any modeler's library.

The closest thing I've seen to that is a model of the Flying Cloud in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It is a rather large scale, I'm guessing 3/8" to 1/2" - 1'-0"
It's hauling into the wind with the stun'sails out. It's been a long time since I've seen it and I don't think there were figures on it but who cares it was beautiful as is.

Absolutely beautiful...Thanks for drawing attention to that sight. The metal work in the close-ups is incredible.

Scrolling thru the pages I found on pages 3 &4 the items he used and the way he did it
There is also probably some kind of "Zen Magic" involved in his work. Fantastic.
Thanks for the diorama book heads-up (I just bought it) want to do one for my Flying Fish clipper in the future.

OK....That's it.....I quit.
I'll never be that good, no matter how long I live.
I have no more respect for my abilities and/or skills.
I have nothing left to live for...................
No hope..............
No future.............

What's the point of going on.............

None; end it all now. But first send me all your tools, kits, wood, etc.
Sure am glad I'm not into competition! I still think it's magic.

I was hoping someone would say something "Oh its not that bad" or "Keep at it Rich and maybe you can be that good someday". ;)
But I think I am going to put it all in a big hole and bury it with a headstone that says "My wife told me so!".
Seriously though, it does take the wind out of your sails (no pun intended) to see something that nice and then try to go back to your own project.
It looks like he used some sort of foam, then carved it into the wave shapes and then just painted it?? It looks soooooo cool and realistic. I am very impressed.

wish I could read japanese so I could find out what the other stuff is (I figured-out the foam).
Don't bury it! I need it! I want it!
Just consider those pic's as "motivation" , you know "someday........" good luck.
