Are you Ex Navy or Still in active service?........

Posted by: yukyo - on -  01-29-2004

Seems we're getting a lot of Navy in the Forum. I've noticed over the years that there is a lot of ship modelers who are or were Navy. Makes sense. I've also noticed that Your ship was the best in the fleet, even if it was a garbage scow. And even if it was, only an ex crewman could call it that. You can insult your ship, but don't let any one else insult it.
So let's start a on going poll. If you are ex Navy, or still in active service, vote and then leave a brief reply post here about your service. Note the keyword - brief. I know how you sailors can go on and on about the good old days. (LOL)
Please, only Naval people can vote.

Love that site too. Easy, "Charlie Foxtrot" = "FUBAR" (term from WW2)
I don't know if he'll answer your email daburb. I don't think he maintains it much any more. May be Haze Gray & Underway may respond. By the way, this is a great site for reading documents and images on many types of Naval vessels.

Interesting! I'm not in the Navy, but I am still in the active service. So, I guess I'm just a land lubber remembering my dad who retired from the Navy - a WWII veteran.

A bit of clarity here, which navy is this applicable to. In my book there are only two, the Royal and the Merchant, both of the UK but then I'm biased. Then as a Scot with 30 years at sea thats understandable!

BM 2 (then 3, then...) well, we won't go into that part! Mostly USNS San Juan on the tugs but a few stints in the S.P. with some other detachments and aboard AD28 USS Grand Canyon. It was fun but all-in-all I prefer to be where my ankles don't hurt.

Pilot 1974-1980 (TA-4J, A-7E), NFO 1980-1997 (EC-130Q, P-3B)
Retired from reserves an O-5 in April 97 after nearly 25 years (10 active/15 reserve). Active with the Navy League of the United States (www.navyleague.org) and the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps (www.seacadets.org).

Got started with ship modeling around 15 when a guy on my paper route gave me a Revell Cutty Sark that had been languishing on top of his refrigerator for over a year partially completed. My parents got me a Revell USS Constitution a few years later for Christmas (have pictures of that one I'll have to dig up and scan someday). Been at it ever since, though my primary interest is US Naval Aircraft.

Have another Cutty Sark in work (since 1974!), just acquired another Constitution ($15 at an antique shop!) and have an Artesania Latina "Harvey" on the shelf. Those along with a bunch of aircraft carriers, a few battleships and three JAG USCG Cutters. Resin is a new deal for me, so those may age like fine wine for a while.

Recently discovered this site. Hope to learn some stuff.

I'll agree you were the first submarine to circumnavigate the world but I know you were not the quickest! In 1958 the USS Skate (SSN57 circumnavigated the world by crossing all lines of longitude at a distance of several miles of the north pole in a matter of hours.

Hello.-
My Grandfather was at the Mexican Navy in 1914, in Veracruz...
My Father was Anesthesiologist in the Mexican navy, I can not be at the Navy Academy because of bad vision and the need to wear glasses, so I enlist at the Navy as soon finish the Medical School, just to expend a whole year all the Navy Hospital in México City, 600 miles from the most close beach.
Them when my first time was ended I left the Navy, now, when 4th wife ask why I left the Navy my answer is: because they did not give any ship.
Best regards.

Former U.S. Marine, does that count? After all, it is a Department of the Navy. Both Grandfathers were U.S. Navy in Korea, one of which became a model shipwright (it seems that I follow that particular Grandfather's footsteps quite a lot). I can't remember their ships or stations at the moment.

Did two 6-year enlistments 1956-1968 USNR, with active duty 1957-1960 aboard USS Douglas A. Munro (DE-422), a Butler-class destroyer-escort, In 1982 I took a commission in the CalArNG as an Army Aviator, did 10 years and went back to sea as Merchant Marine Purser/Supply Officer aboard US Navy Oceanographic Survey Ships (some referred to 'em as being "spy ships" - can't talk much about that, but we WERE in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm sailing just ahead of the carrier battle groups, and a "few" of our antennas didn't go to the radio shack......) Problem is, when I go to an Army/Navy football game,,,,I don't know where to sit!

Hi Fred, your memories strike a note, my dad was also at Okinawa and in Tokyo Harbour for the signing, but as part of the British Pacific Fleet on HMS Quality, destroyer. It's a small world. The USS Hornet was in our Task Group. I have many memories of that time. Some good and some bad fortunately the good far outnumber the bad so I don't have any problems discussing that period. Can you see the numbers on the ship, rhe Hornet was CV-12. Is your father still with you. If so give him my regards.
