I am trying to decide wether to build a Corel or Mamoli HMS Victory. Locating and cutting the gun ports after planking the Corel seems like a real chore compared to planking up to Mamoli's metal ports that are attached to the hull frame.

Hi Don. We missed this post. Did you want opinons or help in making this decision, or have you already decided?

I got some advice on the Corel gun ports but decided to build the mamoli. I may try the Corel kit later or I will sell it.

Thanks.

Don

I can't help you with the gun ports but I am also building a Mamoli Kit, HMS Bounty. Thus far I have found that you must be very careful with the directions and plans. The Bounty plans have some planking size errors and missing detail plans. One other problem that I have encountered is an insufficient supply of planking material, really gets one worked up to find you need two more planks and this after very careful cutting to avoid errors and waste. I am sure you will be fine with the project and the pleasure you will get after correcting missing information or plan design errors.

Thanks for the response.

I have also found that despite my best effort to avoid waste, no matter what kit, a shortage of materials is enevitable. Fortunately, I have found while most kits can have a shortage of some material they also have an abundance of other materials. I have a growing inventory of left over material. I find myself dipping into my inventory of leftovers often.

I agree the lack of detail in the plans in the mamoli kits makes careful planning essential. I built the Mamoli Carraca and enjoyed thoroughly.

So far so good with the HMS Victory.

Hi Don. Here's one idea for all those left over parts - The SS Gloomph (http://shipmodeling.net/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/1296/size/big)

By the way, you don't have to worry about instructions with this one. There are none! No plans either. You just start gluing and painting what ever you happen to pick up first. A sort of free form ship building!

Mamoli just contacted me. It seems they got a look at SS Glooph and they want to go into full scale production. I am willing to serve as your negotiating agent but would advise you hold out until the offer from Corel comes in.

Nah! Think I'll go with Model Shipways. Clearer instructions!!! Or Dumas. They're willing to do it in R/C
