I'm working on planking my first ship and have discovered the need to run battens. Since this is my first planked hull, I don't have any spare wood to use for this purpose. I seem to be living in an area that is devoid of hobby shops that sell anything beyond basket weaving or flower arranging - anyone have an online source for this? Thanks!

I'd recommend The Lumberyard, as they specialize in wood for model ship builders. You can order online at http://www.dlumberyard.com .
Keep us posted on your progress!

Call Mark, they have many more species of wood that are listed, just ask. The quality is top notch.

On the topic of wood, but with a different slant. About three weeks ago I bought a bit of limewood, great stuff to work with, but the dust is a bu.....! This piece cost me £20.00 I decided to build a Dutch Booter with it, according to my measurements this will use less than half the limewood. Its certainly the way to buy if you scratch build. I look at the price of kits and thank God I tried scratch building.
But to each thier own.
Going to the saw mill had a down side, the Bosun spotted some beautiful cherry wood, and I now have strict instruction to build to bedside cabinets. You can't win.
