Has any member of the forum constructed the Smuggler kit from Blue Jacket? I would like to know if it is suitable for intermediate level modelers.

John,
I looked at the "Smuggler" and while I have never built it it does n't look to difficult but it does seem a bit pricey. I would look at Model Shipways "Bluenose"
which you can get until 3/31 for $190. Of course if Smuggler has some meaning for you - Go for it.

Fred: thanks for the advice on the Bluenose, which I have looked at. I am not too fond of the Shipways kits because their instruction manuals seem to be rather brief. I am attracted to Smuggler by the scale, among other things.

John Earl, I'm sure would be more than delighted to give you any information that you require about smuggler. I stand corrected on the kit.
Also, have you seen the new manuals by Ben Lankford that MS now uses?

I am constructing Smuggler at this time. This is my second solid hull model and I feel it is well within the bounds of an intermediate builder, considering myself a beginner. Lots of detail and you can really use your imagination on this one too. All Bluejacket stuff is pricey but the quality of castings, etc is quite good as well as instructions. Good luck

Hello John , One of the guys, ( a novice builder) , in our club build that kit and loved it - lots of detail and it turned out to be a very nice model .

Rick: I am pleased you are currently building Smuggler and I hope you will warn me of any pitfalls that lay ahead. I have nearly finished shaping the hull. Actually, it was reasonably close to the templates to begin with, certainly compared to Phantom, where a lot of cutting and sanding was required.

Looking far ahead, I see the rail is broadened for a section toward the stern to accommodate some belaying pins. How did you handle this problem? Did you go with a broad rail all along the hull and narrow as needed or did you simply insert a broader section where the plans indicate?
