I'm a brand new member - just posted some pics of my first project, and this is my very first post into the forum. I just ordered (late late night :coffee: ) off the web blueprints and a 26 page booklet for "The Revenge". I"m quite sure it was one of Francis Drake's Ships - at present I'm on the web researching all I can find on this ship. This will be my third model, and first attempt at a scratch build. Appreciate any info or links from all you modellers.

You are quite right. The revenge was Sir Francis Drake's flagship during the battles against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

However, her real claim to fame came under the command of Sir Richard Grenville, where in 1591, while awaiting the arrival of the Spanish treasure fleet off the Azores, the Revenge became separated from the rest of the English squadron. When the treasure fleet was sighted, although still alone but not wanting it to escape, he engaged the enemy. Outnumbered 53-1, he fought off ship after ship trying to board her through the night and into the next day. He managed to sink two Spanish ships in the process. Heavily damaged and with half the crew dead, he ordered the Revenge to be blown up. He was convinced otherwise and the ship was surrendered. The crew was taken off and well treated, but the story does not end there. The Revenge never made it to port. During a vicious gale she was thrown up on the rocks and sank with the loss of the entire 200 man Spanish prize crew. Sir Richard Grenville later died of his wounds. Thus the Revenge was guaranteed her place in naval history and folklore.
