I'm trying to work out how to rig the flags on my 1796 Agamemnon.
I have consulted all the usual reference books but have not found a definitive answer.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction to show how I shoud rig:
- an ensign from the gaff
- and a pennant from the mainmast

Ropes and tackles were employed to hoist or lower yards, sails and flags upon the masts. Flag halliards were used for hoisting up the flags. A flag staff (light pole) was used and on which the flag was hoisted. The flag staffs were erected on the mastheads or formed by the upper part of the topgallant masts to hoist the flags, royals, etc. Flag staff trucks were round flat pieces of elm, with a small sheave on each side. They are fixed, by a square mortise hole made in the middle upon the upper end of the flag staffs. Usually a sheave was fitted on each side of the truck. The flag halliards were then reeved and attached to any convenient point on the bulwarks. On the Gaff there was an eye bolt at the boom end. Though which the flag halliard was rigged. I too searched through my library and could find nothing on how the actual flag was attached to the halliard. Sorry, maybe someone else can shed some light on it. Hope the rest helped.
