Hi All,
I was wondering, what size and quantity of Copper Plating would be appropriate for a 1/84 scale Cutty Sark? (I am still working on the Bluenose II but am thinking about the next project already)

I like to order well in advance, (Plating), so that everything will be at hand when the time comes.... (Soonish I hope.... Realistically, probably 6 - 8 months.... :))

I have read, somewhere but the exact details I cannot recall, that the copper plating, when applied should overlap? Is this true?

How is it applied and what adhesives should I use? Contact or ACC?

What is the best method to "Colour" the plating? The pictures of the diorama of the "Victory" is awsome, the plating on the hull looks superb!!

If I did not use Copper Plating, what do other members think of a wooden hullbelow the Waterline?

The more I look at other models with plating, the more I like the look....

By the way, all the best for eveyone's Christmas and New Year!!

Kind Regards,

Harry.

Hi Harry,

Read this old post - Coppered Hulls (http://shipmodeling.net/vb_forum/thread39.html), and this article - Copper Hull Plate Aging (http://shipmodeling.net/vb_forum/articles.php?action=viewarticle&artid=13)

And a Merry Chrismas to you and yours!

Hi Harry! I havent read through all the info provided here but as far as color is concerned,I heated each copper plate with a butane lighter till red hot and then immediately doused it in cold water to get the crazed effect.Hope this helps.Merry Christmas.
Cheers! John.

Hi:

I am building a 1:100 model of the English tea clipper Sir Lancelot, according the book "China Tea Clippers" from George Campbell:

http://www.eraoftheclipperships.com/maritimebookreview6.html

My plates result to be 3,6 mm X 12 mm (at real size 14" to 15" high for 48" long).

This afternoon will review the book at home and come back with more accurate figures.

I have a power point presentation on how i do the copper plating, if you have an email I can send it to you.

While building the MS Charles W Morgan (1:64 scale) I used copper tape 1/4" wide cit to 5/8" long and I am satisfied with the result. Chaeck out my photos to see the results. The copper tape is supplied by MS but is also available from any stained glass supplier. Any questions, please feel free toask!

Hi Again:

I check the Mr. Campbell book, the table shows:

Thickness size Position where used
.025 48"x 20" Side and bottom of keel
.038 48"x 14" Bottom, bilge and side
.044 48" x 14" Bows, wind-waterline area

I hope this info is iseful for you, knowing the real size then you can easily calculate the size at your model scale.
