Yes, Gary - Bugeyes were used for Oyster dredging and sometimes carrying cargo such as grain. The black (iron) manholes on deck were used for quick loading of the latter and for easy trimming as this was done. The launch was the only means of motorized movement as they were not allowed to have, or use engines, it their work - this protected the oyster beds from over harvesting. The lauch was tied tightly in place and drove the ship forwards when moving from place to place. They often displayed an initial on one, or both, of the masts - thus the 'L' I mounted on the foremast.
