Year or period represented: 1787-1790 History: The Bounty, formerly named Bethia, was a merchant ship laid down in 1783 and purchased by the admiralty for an 18 month voyage to the South Seas in 1787. She was captained by LT. William Bligh and was the scene of the famous mutiny lead by Fletcher Christian. The mutineers put Bligh and 18 loyal sailors in the ship's launch, which he navigated over 3600 miles to Timor. Bounty was sailed by the mutineers to Pitcairn Island where she was beached and burned to the waterline.
