Model Competition Display - Agamemnon By Model Shipwright - Grandad (Roger)
Model: Agamemnon
Category: Modified Kit & Kit
Classification: Historic Sail
Build: Modified Kit - Plank on Bulkhead

Year or period represented: 1796

History: Represented as in April 1796 when Nelson was her Commander.

Scale and / or dimensions: 1/64

Construction method / materials used: The hull is planked in pearwood, the deck is in maple and the spars in beech. The rigging was made on a homemade ropewalk. The brass side rails supplied were replaced with scratch built pearwood rails - this matches the period before the bumble bee black and yellow. All lower deck guns are full guns. The 12,500 treenails in the hull and deck are pearwood and maple and of different sizes, as they were on the full size ship. The deck planking has been joggled where appropriate and has been caulked using black paper strips. The whole ship was treated with Danish oil and then teak oil. The ships boats were completely scratch built including all fittings. The ships wheel was scratch built. All the stern oiled woodwork was scratch built.

Additional information: Additional photoetching was self-designed and added to the catheads and stern decoration to match what research indicates is probably correct. The copper sheathing was treated with a chemical to give the dark patina.

Research: Plans from the National Maritime Museum and the model is rigged according to the specifications in Steel's Masting and Rigging of 1794. Other research material: Goodwin's Sailing Man of War; Lees Masting and Rigging; Darcy Lever's Sheet Anchor and the Anatomy of the Ship Bellona.
