Year or period represented: 1850 to 1870 History: New Bedford Whaleboat, used by the New Bedford Whalers in the whaling industry around the world. Scale and / or dimensions: 1 1/8" = 1 ft The model is 32" long, 7" wide Construction method / materials used: Totally scratch built. All lumber cut and sanded to size. Hull and oars are poplar; sheerstrake and seats are black walnut; harpoons and barrels are cherry; harpoon shafts are coat hangers. Additional information: The model shipway plans were enlarged on a photocopy machine to the current scale. The plans for this boat are based on the boats built by Joshua H. Delano in 1916 for the half-scale model of whaling bark Lagoda in the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Research: Erik A.R.
