Model Competition Display - Alexis By Model Shipwright - Markos (Markos)
Model: Alexis
Category: Scratch & Semi Scratch
Classification: Historic Sail
Build: Semi Scratch - Solid Carved Hull

Year or period represented: 1200(?) to the present

History: Dhows have been used for transportation of cargo freight and human passage in the Indian Ocean and Africa for hundreds of years. This model is a generalized representation of this type of ship.

Scale and / or dimensions: Length: 39 cm. Width: 8 cm. Height: 38 cm.

Construction method / materials used: Solid carved hull of walnut (lower) and poplar(upper), lay-out and construction of hand-ripped or carved woods (oak, red oak, walnut, basswood, ebony, bone, purple rosewood, poplar, pine, cocabola, mahogany and rosewood. Fittings of gold, silver, brass and lead.

Additional information: I did use pre-cast cleats, two scrap deck guns, a pair of bollards on the bow, two brass lions' heads on the stern and four pieces of gold scroll. All of the rest I've hand made of silver, brass or gold. All pulleys are hand made as well as the mast top pulleys. I especially like the silver anchor and the pinion and gudgeon arrangement on the rudder of silver and brass. This is the first of my boats to concentrate entirely on the color composition of the wood and materials to achieve the boats' comfortable unpainted aesthetic.

Research: Trying to find good representations of the rigging configurations on a Dhow proved to be a daunting task. Very little is available on the Internet of any clarity. I was tempted on our last trip to Greece this past summer to sail further (two days) to get some close-up pictures, but my wife talked me out of it. The rigging is as close as I could get with the photos I could find and may be somewhat out of context.
