Year or period represented: 1880 - 1939 History: Built in Bath, ME in 1883, the Benj. F. Packard was a three deck, three mast, square sail yarder. She was a large wooden cargo carrier built to carry general cargo up and down the East coast of the USA. She also made numerous trips around the cape to the Pacific coast. In 1898 she was owned by the Arthur Sewall Co, whose flag the model displays. In 1908 the Packard joined the Alaska Packers fleet in connection with the salmon canning operation. In 1925, became a lumber carrier. In 1926 or 1927, she was towed to Long Island and laid aground until 1930, at which time she became part of the Playland Amusement Park attraction in Rye NY as a Pirate Ship. The 1938 hurricane damaged her so badly that in 1939 she was towed out in the sound and allowed to sink, but not before the captains' cabin was dismantled and rebuilt for display at the Mystic Seaport of Mystic CT. Constructed mostly from basswood, plywood, and styrene plastic for decking. Ship's boats are metal.
