| Q | How do I ship (transport) model ships? *(wirewolf) |
| A | The obvious answer would be, "Very Carefully!" But kidding aside, ship models can be delivered everywhere, by a parcel service or transport companies, or by air cargo to any place, but one has to take special precautions. Transportation is a difficult affair, because the ship models are sensitive and can easily be damaged or destroyed.
If your transporting your model locally, you can go with the fluffy pillow method, Just don't hit the brakes too hard! And have a trusted helper gently hold the model:
Or another option for local transport is to construct a "Transport Board". Usually made on a flat stable board with support struts made of either cloth covered wood or Styrofoam fastened to the board. You can also use tie down cords to help stabilize the model:
But the best by far is to hire a packer/shipper listed as a "Fine Arts Packer and Transporter". These companies are quite adept at packing and shipping articles of museum quality. They can custom make crates suited for any size ship model, arrange for transportation (air, truck, etc.) and provide insurance (a must!). Example of a model being prepared for shipment:
This will not be cheap! But considering the fragileness of your prized possession, well worth the money. Here is a link to some Fine Art Shippers (mostly on the East Coast of the US). You can visit some of their sites to get an idea of their methods. Fine Art Shippers can be found just about anywhere in the world. If you want a recommendation for one, contact a local museum or your insurance company.
