A home made tool for shaping Masts and Yards

I do not have finances to go out and buy a lathe to shape masts and yards from dowel material supplied in kits so i have improvised using a drill stand (Tork Craft and a base made from scraps of chipboard and other timber. I have used this to shape all masts and yards on my current project HMS Supply from Artesania Latina and it worked like a charm. See pictures below [Read More]

Workshop Ideas?

I'm trying to get motivated in creating a long over due workshop out of a small unused room. I've been neglecting my hobbies for far too long and maybe a new dedicated space would help. I'm not new to this, but this is the first place I've lived since moving out on my own in 1982 that I haven't had a dedicated "hobby" room.

Coppering the Constellation

When I look at ship models with coppered bottoms I notice that many of them emboss the nail pattern in them from the back side of the copper to create a raised nail head effect. I don't know why, because from what I gather copper sheets were nailed on using flat headed nails, counter sunk flush with the sheet.
at the top of the image is a counter sunk nail, the bottom is what most models imply
